IELTS Writing Task 2: What Band 7 Essays Actually Look Like

The exact differences between band 6, 7 and 8 Task 2 essays — with the structures our British Council test-centre trainers teach every week.

Band 6 vs 7 in four lines

Band 6 answers the question generally; band 7 takes and sustains a clear position. Band 6 lists ideas; band 7 develops each with explanation plus specific example. Band 6 uses correct grammar; band 7 uses a mix of simple and complex forms with few accidents.

The ACE Task 2 skeleton

Introduction: paraphrase + position. Body 1: strongest argument, explained, exemplified. Body 2: second argument or concession, handled honestly. Conclusion: restate position without new ideas. Never more, never less.

Vocabulary that impresses

Collocation over fancy words: 'play a pivotal role', 'pose a significant threat', 'reap substantial benefits'. Three precise collocations per paragraph move LR from 6 to 7 faster than ten rare words misused.
